If a winter storm warning covers you
Stay off the roads if you can. If you must drive, carry blankets, water, food, a phone charger and a shovel, and tell someone your route. Never run a generator, grill or camp stove indoors or near a window: carbon monoxide kills in storms like these. Follow your local officials and Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone. What this page counts
Every Winter Storm Warning the National Weather Service lists as active, read from its public alerts service (api.weather.gov) about every five minutes. Updated messages replace the ones they update, cancellations are dropped, and a warning stays on the list until its own end time. Watches and advisories are not included. A warning covering more than one state is listed under each. Times are shown in each state's main time zone.
Questions
Is there a winter storm warning today?
Yes. 4 winter storm warnings are in effect right now: Alaska (4) (checked 18:55 UTC, 19 Oct 2026).
What is the difference between a winter storm watch and a winter storm warning?
A winter storm watch means heavy snow, sleet or freezing rain is possible, usually 12 to 48 hours ahead. A winter storm warning means it is happening or expected, usually issued 12 to 36 hours before it begins. A winter weather advisory is the level below a warning.
How much snow makes a winter storm warning?
There is no single national number. Each National Weather Service office sets local criteria: in many northern areas it is around 6 inches of snow in 12 hours, but far less in southern states where a little snow or ice causes real problems, and more in the mountains. Heavy sleet or freezing rain can also bring a warning.
