If a ice storm warning covers you
Expect power cuts: charge phones, have flashlights and a safe way to stay warm, and never run a generator, grill or camp stove indoors. Stay well away from fallen power lines. Avoid travel; bridges and overpasses ice first. Follow your local officials and Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone. This site does not issue warnings. Safety guides →
What this page counts
Every Ice Storm Warning the National Weather Service lists as active, read from its public alerts service (api.weather.gov) about every five minutes. Updated messages replace the ones they update, cancellations are dropped, and a warning stays on the list until its own end time. Watches and advisories are not included. A warning covering more than one state is listed under each. Times are shown in each state's main time zone.
Questions
Is there an ice storm warning today?
No. No ice storm warnings are in effect anywhere in the United States right now (checked 19:44 UTC, 19 Oct 2026).
What is an ice storm warning?
The National Weather Service issues an ice storm warning when freezing rain is expected to coat surfaces with enough ice to bring down trees and power lines and make roads dangerous. In most areas the threshold is a quarter of an inch of ice or more, though criteria vary by office.
What is the difference between freezing rain and sleet?
Freezing rain falls as liquid rain and freezes on contact with cold surfaces, coating them in a glaze of ice. Sleet is rain that freezes into ice pellets before it reaches the ground, and it bounces when it lands. Freezing rain is the one that brings down power lines.
What should I do in an ice storm?
Prepare for power cuts, stay home if you can, keep away from fallen lines and trees under strain, and never use a generator or grill indoors. Follow your utility and local officials for outage and shelter information.
