Historical Disaster Replay

Watch disasters unfold on a map, hour by hour. Each replay below plays back a major earthquake and the earthquakes around it, with the story in plain numbers underneath; the last seven days on this site can be replayed the same way.

Coverage by source

The sequences are snapshots of the US Geological Survey's global earthquake catalog, each for a fixed circle, a month and a minimum magnitude that the page states. The last seven days are this site's own records from the agencies it follows, which differ widely in how much they report: a country whose services publish many warnings will look busier than one that publishes few. None of these replays is a complete record of every disaster, and none is a forecast.

Questions

What is an aftershock?

An earthquake that follows a larger one in the same area. Each replay plays back a major earthquake and the earthquakes recorded around it, hour by hour, so you can see where and when they happened.

Is a disaster replay a forecast?

No. Each replay is a record of earthquakes the US Geological Survey catalog holds for a fixed area and period, played back in order. It says nothing about what will happen next.

Why might the first day of a replay show fewer earthquakes than happened?

In the first hours after a very large earthquake many aftershocks are not recorded, because their signals overlap in the seismograms, so the first day's count is lower than what happened.
