What this page counts
Every Tornado Warning the National Weather Service lists as active, read from its public alerts service (api.weather.gov) about every five minutes. Updated messages replace the ones they update, cancellations are dropped, and a warning stays on the list until its own end time. Watches and advisories are not included. A tornado watch means conditions are favourable for tornadoes; the Storm Prediction Center issues it, usually for several hours over a large area, and it means be ready. A tornado warning means a tornado has been seen or is indicated by radar; the local National Weather Service office issues it for a small drawn area, usually for less than an hour, and it means take shelter now.
What is a tornado emergency?
The most urgent wording the National Weather Service uses: a tornado warning upgraded because a large, violent tornado has been confirmed and is heading for a populated area. It is rare. The response is the same as for any tornado warning: take shelter immediately.
