If a blizzard warning covers you
Do not travel. If you are caught in a vehicle, stay with it, run the engine about 10 minutes an hour for heat with the exhaust pipe kept clear of snow, and keep a window slightly open. At home, prepare for power cuts and never use a generator or grill indoors. Follow your local officials and Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone. This site does not issue warnings. Safety guides →
What this page counts
Every Blizzard Warning the National Weather Service lists as active, read from its public alerts service (api.weather.gov) about every five minutes. Updated messages replace the ones they update, cancellations are dropped, and a warning stays on the list until its own end time. Watches and advisories are not included. A warning covering more than one state is listed under each. Times are shown in each state's main time zone.
Questions
Is there a blizzard warning today?
No. No blizzard warnings are in effect anywhere in the United States right now (checked 19:44 UTC, 19 Oct 2026).
What is a blizzard warning?
The National Weather Service issues a blizzard warning for sustained winds or frequent gusts of 35 mph or more with considerable falling or blowing snow that reduces visibility to under a quarter of a mile, for three hours or more. It is about wind and visibility, not how much snow falls.
What is the difference between a blizzard warning and a winter storm warning?
A winter storm warning is about the amount of snow, sleet or ice. A blizzard warning is about wind and blowing snow making visibility near zero, even when little new snow falls. Both mean travel is dangerous.
