Watch or warning: what the words mean
| NWS product | What it means |
|---|---|
| Fire weather watch | Critical fire weather is possible, usually 12 to 72 hours ahead. |
| Red flag warning | Warm temperatures, very low humidity and stronger winds are expected to combine now or within about 24 hours, so a fire can start easily and spread fast. |
If a red flag warning covers you
Do not burn anything outdoors. Avoid anything that can throw a spark: dragging trailer chains, parking or driving on dry grass, mowing dry vegetation, and discarding cigarettes. Check your county or fire agency for burn bans, and have a plan to leave quickly if a fire starts near you. Follow your local officials and Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone. What this page counts
Every Red Flag Warning the National Weather Service lists as active, read from its public alerts service (api.weather.gov) about every five minutes. Updated messages replace the ones they update, cancellations are dropped, and a warning stays on the list until its own end time. Watches and advisories are not included. A warning covering more than one state is listed under each. Times are shown in each state's main time zone.
Questions

No. No red flag warnings are in effect anywhere in the United States right now (checked 18:55 UTC, 19 Oct 2026).

What does a red flag warning mean?
The National Weather Service issues a red flag warning when warm temperatures, very low humidity and stronger winds are expected to combine, now or within about 24 hours, into conditions where a fire can start easily and spread fast. It does not mean a fire is burning. Each forecast office sets its thresholds with local fire agencies, so the criteria in Southern California differ from those on the Plains or in Florida.
What is the difference between a fire weather watch and a red flag warning?
A fire weather watch means critical fire weather is possible, usually 12 to 72 hours ahead. A red flag warning means it is happening now or will within about 24 hours.
What is not allowed during a red flag warning?
The warning itself bans nothing; restrictions come from your state, county, city or fire agency. Many of them ban outdoor burning while a red flag warning is in effect, and some also restrict campfires, fireworks or equipment use. Check your local fire department or land agency.
