What the flood categories mean

Action stage The river is near flood stage. NWS and local officials start preparing; there is no flooding yet.
Minor flooding Minimal or no property damage, but possibly some public threat, such as water over low roads.
Moderate flooding Some buildings near the river may flood, roads may close and some evacuations may be needed.
Major flooding Extensive flooding of buildings and roads, with significant evacuations of people and property.

Each gauge has its own stages, set by NWS for that spot on the river. A stage is a gauge height, not a water depth. "Forecast high" is the highest level in the latest NWS forecast for that gauge; if it falls at the end of the forecast, the river may still be rising after it.

What is flood stage?

Flood stage is the river level, measured at a gauge, at which the river starts to cause flooding at that place. The National Weather Service sets it for each gauge, along with an action stage just below it and levels for minor, moderate and major flooding. The numbers are gauge heights, not water depths, so 20 feet at one gauge cannot be compared with 20 feet at another.

What do action, minor, moderate and major flooding mean?

Action stage means the river is close to flooding and officials start preparing. Minor flooding means little or no property damage but some public threat, such as water over low roads. Moderate flooding means some buildings near the river may flood and some evacuations may be needed. Major flooding means extensive flooding of buildings and roads and significant evacuations.

Is this a flood warning?

No. These are observed and forecast river levels from National Weather Service gauges. Flood warnings are issued separately by NWS forecast offices and are listed on this site's US weather alerts pages. A river can be in flood at a gauge without a warning for your street, and a flash flood can happen far from any gauge, so follow local warnings and officials.
