FEMA deadlines: disasters you can still apply for
Every federal major disaster declaration that opened individual assistance and whose application deadline, by FEMA's standard 60-day registration period, has not passed yet, soonest first. Each date is an estimate: FEMA often extends deadlines, and DisasterAssistance.gov has the official one.

Estimated deadline passed in the last 30 days
The standard 60 days have run out for these, but FEMA often extends a deadline, and it can accept a late registration with a reason. Check the declaration's FEMA page or DisasterAssistance.gov before assuming it is too late.

How these dates are worked out
OpenFEMA publishes no deadline, so each date here is the declaration date plus 60 days, FEMA's standard registration period for individual assistance (44 CFR 206.112). Only major disaster declarations that opened the Individuals and Households Program in at least one area are listed. FEMA announces extensions for one disaster at a time and this page does not track them. Apply at DisasterAssistance.gov, in the FEMA app, or by calling 800-621-3362.
Questions
Which FEMA disaster deadlines are still open?
8 major disaster declarations with individual assistance are still open for applications, by the standard 60-day estimate, in 8 states or territories. The soonest is DR-4933-IN (Severe Storms, Straight-Line Winds, Tornadoes, and Flooding), apply by about 24 Oct 2026 (5 days left).
What is the deadline to apply for FEMA assistance?
For individual assistance after a major disaster, FEMA's standard registration period is 60 days from the date the President declares the disaster (44 CFR 206.112). FEMA often extends it, and the extension is announced for that disaster only. The "apply by" dates on this site are that standard 60 days counted from the declaration date, so they are estimates; the official deadline for each disaster is on DisasterAssistance.gov and on the disaster's page at fema.gov. You can apply at DisasterAssistance.gov, in the FEMA app, or by calling 800-621-3362.
Has the FEMA deadline been extended?
Often, but not always, and only by FEMA for a specific disaster. An extension is published on the disaster's page at fema.gov and in FEMA news releases, and DisasterAssistance.gov shows the current deadline. This site does not track extensions, which is why every date here is marked as an estimate. If the estimated date has passed, check before assuming it is too late.
Which counties can apply for FEMA individual assistance?
Only the counties, parishes, tribal areas and other places FEMA has designated for individual assistance in that declaration. Some declarations open individual assistance in a few counties and only public assistance (money for governments) in the rest. Each declaration on this page lists the areas designated for individual assistance; FEMA can add more later.
What if I miss the FEMA deadline?
Under the same rule, FEMA can accept a late registration for up to 60 more days if you give a reason, with documents, for why you could not register in time, for example because you were displaced or in hospital. Call the FEMA helpline on 800-621-3362 or ask at a Disaster Recovery Center. Other help, such as SBA disaster loans, has its own deadlines.
How to read these tables
- Major disaster (DR) and emergency (EM) declarations are made by the President; fire management (FM) declarations are approved by FEMA.
- Days to declaration counts from the first day of the incident period FEMA recorded to the declaration date. Days from request counts from the date of the governor's or tribal leader's request. Both are calculated here from FEMA's dates.
- Designated areas are the counties, parishes, boroughs, tribal areas and other places FEMA lists for the declaration, including any added later. A designation may cover only some of the programs.
- Programs: IH = Individuals and Households Program, IA = Individual Assistance, PA = Public Assistance, HM = Hazard Mitigation — included in at least one designated area.
- Individual assistance is Yes when the declaration opens the Individuals and Households Program (help people register for) in at least one designated area.
- Apply by (estimate) is FEMA's standard registration period for individual assistance after a major disaster: 60 days from the declaration date (44 CFR 206.112), calculated here. It is an estimate: FEMA often extends deadlines, and DisasterAssistance.gov has the official date. Emergency and fire management declarations have no date here. Open deadlines, soonest first.
- Pending requests are not published in OpenFEMA. Only declarations that were made and requests that were turned down appear, so a request still under review is on neither list.
