Gritter tracker UK: live gritter maps and gritting routes by council
Are the roads gritted tonight? Councils grit their own roads, and many publish a live map of their gritters or the routes they treat. This page links the official one for 106 councils, 11 of them with a live gritter map, and the national bodies that grit motorways and trunk roads.
Snow or ice on the way? Ice and snow warnings in force now, by area, are on UK weather warnings by region. Councils plan gritting from road-weather forecasts each afternoon and evening.
Links checked on 18 October 2026. Most live gritter maps only show gritters during the winter season, roughly October to April.
Motorways and trunk roads
Councils do not grit motorways or trunk roads. These national bodies do; in Northern Ireland, where councils do not look after roads, the Department for Infrastructure (DfI Roads) grits the whole salted network.

What gets gritted
Each council treats a priority network first: main roads, bus routes and the roads to hospitals, fire and ambulance stations, and often schools. In heavy or lasting snow some councils add a second tier of routes once the first is clear. Quiet residential roads and most pavements are not gritted, though many councils fill grit bins for residents to use on public roads and paths. A gritted road can still be icy: salt needs traffic to work it in, can be washed off by rain, and works less well in very hard frost.

Questions
Are the roads gritted tonight?
Councils decide each afternoon or evening from road-weather forecasts, and grit their priority routes when frost, ice or snow is expected. Councils with a live gritter map show where their gritters are and have been; others publish the routes they treat. This page links each official one.
Which roads get gritted?
Each council treats a priority network first: main roads, bus routes and the roads to hospitals, emergency services and often schools. Quiet residential roads and most pavements are not gritted, so take care even on a night the gritters are out.
Who grits motorways and trunk roads?
Not the council. National Highways grits motorways and major A roads in England, Transport Scotland's operating companies grit Scotland's trunk roads, the Welsh Government's trunk road agents grit Wales's, and the Department for Infrastructure grits the main roads in Northern Ireland.
Does a gritted road mean no ice?
No. Salt needs traffic to work it in, can be washed off by rain, and works less well in very hard frost. A gritted road can still be icy, especially early in the morning.
