Wildfires in Canada

Active wildfires reported by Canada's provincial, territorial and Parks Canada fire agencies, by province and territory: how many, their stage of control, the area they cover, and the season so far. From the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System (CWFIS) at Natural Resources Canada. For evacuation orders and local updates, follow your province or territory and local officials.

Outside the main fire season. From October to April most of Canada's fire agencies have closed their season, national situation reports stop until spring, and many fire weather stations stop reporting. The fires listed here are still the agencies' own reports; the season totals below cover 2026 so far.

Fire weather at reporting stations

No weather station is reporting a fire weather index today; most stop for the winter.

What the stages of control mean

  • Out of control The fire is still spreading and is not responding to suppression, or is not being actioned.
  • Being held With the resources on it, the fire is not expected to spread further under current conditions.
  • Under control The fire has been contained and is not expected to spread; crews may still be working on it.

Questions

How many wildfires are burning in Canada right now?

153 wildfires are active in Canada right now, reported by 8 agencies: 61 out of control, 18 being held, 74 under control. The list is read from the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System every 30 minutes; agencies update their reports once or twice a day. From October to April most fire agencies have closed their season, so the list is short and some agencies report less often.

What do out of control, being held and under control mean?

They are the stages of control Canadian fire agencies use. Out of control means the fire is still spreading or is not responding to suppression. Being held means that, with the resources on it, the fire is not expected to spread further under current conditions. Under control means it is contained and will not spread, though crews may still be working on it. A fire is declared out when it is extinguished, and it then leaves the active list.

What is the National Preparedness Level?

A 1 to 5 scale set by the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) for how stretched Canada's wildfire resources are nationally. Level 1 means agencies are managing with their own crews and equipment; level 5 means all national resources are committed and international help is being brought in. It is reported in the national situation report, which is weekly in the fire season.

Where can I find evacuation orders and official updates?

From the province or territory and your local authority, not from this page. Each provincial and territorial wildfire agency publishes its own fire map and updates, and evacuation orders come from local governments and emergency management. This page summarises the national data and links to the official sources.
